K-5 Classroom Reading List and Progress Measures

This provisional classroom reference pairs six title anchors per level with a construct-matched brief progress indicator for Kindergarten and Grades 1–5. The approved cover inventory below supplies one usable cover image for each of 27 approved cover records—26 current found covers and one verified replacement—with no title requiring generated-only artwork. The six-title-per-level instructional matrices remain unchanged, so the 27-cover inventory is a bounded visual set rather than a replacement for the 36 instructional anchors. It uses Common Core reading domains as a working U.S. reference, not a universal placement system. Title fit and reading routes are planning judgments, not verified independent-reading levels. A local standards, assessment, edition, access, and reading-specialist crosswalk is required before classroom adoption.

Classroom map

  • Kindergarten: Match the illustrative DIBELS 8 route to the target: PSF for phoneme segmentation, or NWF WRF only when decoding or word reading is the documented target. Pair the probe with an oral retell, event order, main-topic, or key-detail response. Anchors: The Snowy Day ; A Tree Is a Plant ; Chicka Chicka Boom Boom ; How Do Apples Grow? ; The Listening Walk ; Last Stop on Market Street .
  • Grade 1: Use NWF WRF for a demonstrated word-level bottleneck, then ORF when connected-text fluency is the target. Pair it with a beginning–middle–end retell and a central-message or main-topic detail. Anchors: The Story of Ferdinand ; From Seed to Plant ; There Is a Bird on Your Head! ; What Do You Do with a Tail Like This? ; Weather ; The Day You Begin .
  • Grade 2: Use ORF as the illustrative primary brief connected-reading indicator; retain NWF WRF only for a demonstrated word-level need. Do not assume Maze: Grade 2 remains pending explicit current-material and local authorization. Pair the probe with a central-message or main-topic response, sequence, and detail. Anchors: The Stories Julian Tells ; A Medieval Feast ; Sunset of the Sabertooth ; The Princess in Black ; Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows ; The Magic School Bus: Inside the Earth .
  • Grade 3: Use ORF as the illustrative primary brief fluency indicator; add Maze only when current materials and the local plan authorize it. Pair it with a theme or main-idea claim, chronology or character idea relationship, and two details. Anchors: Charlotte’s Web ; Who Was Amelia Earhart? ; Who Was Jackie Robinson? ; Frindle ; A Boy Called Bat ; The One and Only Bob .
  • Grade 4: Use ORF as the illustrative primary brief fluency indicator; Maze is supplementary only when authorized, and local word analysis is error-pattern driven. Pair it with an inference, theme, or main-idea response, summary, and text-feature explanation. Anchors: Because of Winn-Dixie ; The Great Fire ; The Wild Robot Escapes ; El Deafo ; The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind ; Amina’s Voice .
  • Grade 5: Use ORF as the illustrative primary brief fluency indicator; Maze is supplementary only when authorized, and targeted word analysis is a separate decision. Pair it with quotation or accurate paraphrase, summary, comparison, and visual integration. Anchors: Esperanza Rising ; Volcanoes ; The Crossover ; Front Desk ; I Am Malala ; Hidden Figures .

Classroom routine

Choose the route from the observed error pattern and instructional target, not grade alone. Record the selected measure and rationale, grade season form, date, assessor, raw score, accuracy or error pattern, accommodation, and review date. Use the anchor through the access route that preserves the learning goal, then record a separate 0–2 teacher-scored text response with title edition, prompt, language or communication route, supports, evidence, and interpretation. Review comparable progress points rather than treating one score as a diagnosis or placement decision. See the DIBELS resources and administration scoring guide.

Boundaries before adoption

Reading-specialist verification remains required. The evidence packet reports that direct reading of several official pages was unavailable; retained URLs are evidence trails for specialist recheck, not a claim that current manuals or benchmark contents were independently verified here. Confirm the adopted vendor, exact grade season forms, current benchmark table, Maze authorization and scoring, accommodations, assessor calibration, local cadence, aimline, and decision rule. No state or district standards, curriculum sequence, or summative policy was supplied. This is a bounded six-title-per-level anchor set, not a complete library or a universal U.S. placement system. Confirm the exact ISBN edition, adaptation, access route, language supports, cultural representation, sensitive-content treatment, and local complexity evidence. The K–1 anchors are not a controlled decodable sequence; attach the local decodable progression and foundational diagnostic path, including whenever a later student needs support. Do not infer a book level from a series name, book number, cover, ORF score, Maze score, or URL.

Source register

The structured report above contains the full register for standards, measures, and all 36 title records. Core references include the Common Core ELA hub, Appendix B text exemplars, DIBELS About page, DIBELS materials, the DIBELS administration scoring guide, the DIBELS benchmark-goal resource, the supplied benchmark-goal PDF, Acadience Reading K–6, and NCII progress-monitoring guidance. Publisher or author records support title and creator identity; fit, complexity, access, and content notes are provisional selection judgments. No numeric book level, norm, cut score, or assessment-adoption claim is made.
